Oh BOY!!! Hope you like this one! We will be painting in Hartford at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum connected to the Schauer Art Center at 147 N Rural St on Saturday Feburary 25th!!! Will will be able to get in at 10am and can stay till close if you like. Bring a dropcloth!!!!We will take a break for lunch (bring your own) and critique at 1pm. Admission is normally $10 but I have negotiated the exchange of some of my art for free admission for you!! Tom Nachreiner grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from Verona High School. He spent one year studying art at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and then transferred to Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art where he received his Bachelor of Arts in fine arts, achieving highest honors. After graduating, Nachreiner started his own successful illustration company and, among other honors, had his paintings accepted three times into the New York Society of Illustrators Show. Tom has won illustration awards locally, regionally and nationally.

Nachreiner leads three-day and weeklong workshops at his studio/gallery, Maple Avenue Studio, in Waukesha County, and he is represented in Door County at Edgewood Galleries. He has also participated in the Door County Plein Air Festival, as well as taught workshops at the Peninsula School of Art. Nachreiner’s next show at Edgewood Orchard Galleries will be June 16 through July 18, 2012.

Randy Rasmussen (RR): Tom you have had an outstanding career as both an illustrator and a fine artist winning many awards. Is there one award or prize you remember as being most important?

Tom Nachreiner (TN): While I was in Layton School of Art – rated number five art school at the time – I received the highest merit award scholarship given each year to a senior student. The Miriam Frink & Charlotte Partridge Scholarship consisted of full tuition, art supplies and books for the senior year, (along with bragging rights for being the best of the class). That award started my art career out on a winning note.

RR: I have interviewed many artists, and it seems they always enjoyed drawing at an early age. Do you remember when you started to draw and create?

TN: I didn't have any formal training in grade school or high school, but I started drawing in pencil only with a stump for blending, doing portraits at home and in study hall at school. I purchased several books about drawing and was inspired.

RR: Did you have any teachers who gave you encouragement to follow a career in art? Did you know even before high school that this is what you wanted to do with your life?

TN: I had no encouragement other than my parents and friends until college. I wanted to become an engineer or architect because of my strong math and science background in high school. I also excelled at sports. I knew when I got into the engineering department at UW Madison and then saw the art department that I wanted to switch majors. I did receive encouragement from several distinguished college instructors.

RR: Was it difficult making the transition from illustrator to fine artist?

TN: It wasn't too difficult to switch from commercial illustration to fine art because my style from my freshman year in Madison, my natural style, remained painterly from the beginning. I did both fine art and national illustration in a similar style since 1989 and exclusively fine art since 2000.

RR: Your website, which I encourage readers to visit, has many paintings of Door County. Do you have a favorite place to paint in Door County?

TN: My favorite place to paint in Door County, actually, are two places – Fish Creek and Ephraim. I consider that area to be the heart of Door County. There is the art school, a wide variety of subject and lots of traffic. I really don't think there is a bad spot to paint in Door County.

RR: I was fortunate to watch you paint this year in Baileys Harbor for the Peninsula School of Art’s Plein Air Festival. When you start a painting, what size and type of brush do you use to block the initial work in? How many colors are on the standard "Nachreiner" palette?

TN: I start blocking in each painting with a large "bright” brush [which has a flat ferrule and short hairs that are usually as wide as they are long] after first establishing the composition and center of interest in a rough drawing with a small brush. Outdoors, my palette has changed recently to yellow, red, blue and white. I can get every color using just those four colors. Sometimes I do use alizarin or black if I am doing figures or still lifes in the studio.

RR: In your years of teaching is there one common mistake you see students making?

TN: Virtually all students squeeze out too little paint. I abide by the saying, “Squeeze out paint like you are rich.” Also most students use brushes that are too small. Other issues are: painting too smooth, too much fussy detail, and raw colors. I address these issues along with creating a dynamic composition in my workshops along with stressing good drawing and correct values.

RR: How many plein air events do you paint in every year?

TN: I paint in three plein air events each year – New Harmony, Indiana, First Brush of Spring; Cedarburg Plein Air Competition; and the Door County Plein Air Festival. This will be my sixth year invited to the Door County festival.

Plein Air Artists featured at SchlitzAudubon Nature Center

Milwaukee,WI – Schlitz Audubon Nature Center(SANC) is pleased to feature Plein Air artists Pamela Ruschman and Lynn Rix atan Art Exhibit held Thursday, September 15 from 5:30pm – 9:00pm at SANC. The exhibit will feature over 80 paintingscompleted by the two artists “en plein air” on the grounds of Schlitz AudubonNature Center over the course of the year.

“En plein air” in French literally means“in the open air,” where artists venture out of their studios to investigateand capture the effects of light on various subjects. The paintings featured atthe Art Exhibit were completed entirely in plein air and with no photoreferences.

“We find that working directly from lifebrings honesty and rawness to our work,” Ruschman said. “You are able to seecolors that are impossible to see working from photographs.”

The two painters were introduced to theproperty when Ruschman’s four-year-old son began his first day of preschool atthe Center. Intrigued by the beauty of the Autumn season, the artists began anintensive study of the property and found that all seasons could be captured inart.

“We love the entire visual and sensoryexperience of painting plein air,” Ruschman said. “From the solitary silence tothe howling winds, and even the crackling under our feet during the changing ofthe seasons.”

Audubon Preschool Teacher Liesl Schultzwill also be showcasing a photography exhibit, Little Hands, Big Discoveries. The exhibit includes a collection ofover 20 portraits that capture nature-based exploration by SANC preschoolersthroughout the year.

Ruschman and Rix have generouslycommitted to donating 40% of each sale to support environmental educationefforts at SANC. The exhibit will also remain on display at SANC on Friday,September 16 from 9:00am – 11:30am.

Saturday, August 20, 2011 was the Antique & Classic Boat Show and Waterfront Art Fair at Lakefront Park in downtown Pewaukee. The Pewaukee Area Arts Council hosted a plein air painting competition with $1,500 in prize money at stake. His work is in the collection of the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, and Americana Museum, El Paso, TX, as well as corporate and private collections worldwide. He has won numerous national and regional awards over the past 20 years, most recently Best of Show at the 50th annual Texas Watercolor Society National Exhibition. Morning all!

This Easter weekend I know will be busy for all but it is the 4th Saturday in April and so if you can, we will paint...In Waukesha! We will meet at the Clinton Street Gallery at 8 AM and then again at noon for Critique. I've been keeping an eye on the weather...cloudy and highs in the lower 50's. Charles Allis Museum Plein Air Art and Garden Sale: Registration deadline April 30th

Plein Air Art and Garden Sale and Allis Garden Restoration

Lest we forget, the Charles Allis is also experiencing the early stages of Spring fever too, and the gardens there are also spectacular in the Spring and Summer months. To get everyone excited about Spring, planting gardens, and being eco-friendly, the Charles Allis Art Museum will be hosting a Plein Air Art and Garden Sale on Saturday, May 14. I must admit I am very excited about this event! Our lovely Ann has put together a press release announcing this event, so without further ado, take it away Ann!

The Charles Allis Art Museum will host Plein Air Art and Garden Sale - "From Our Garden to Yours" on Saturday, May 14 from 9 am to 4 pm. Local Plein Air artists will paint in the Allis museum's English garden beginning on Thursday, May 12. Their completed works will be ready for sale at 2:30 pm during Saturday's festivities.

Additional activities include viewing Plein Air landscapes in the Charles and Sarah Allis collection, the sale of plants, crafts for kids, garden giveaways, and a presentation by The Green Team, Sustainable Landscape Management. The Green Team will speak about the Allis garden's transformation and display one of their eco-friendly lawn mowers.

The Charles Allis event staff thanks Johnson's Nursery, The Flower Source and The Green Team for their sponsorship of Plein Air Art and Garden Sale-"From Our Garden to Yours."

Plan to attend this family, admission-free day at Milwaukee's Charles Allis Art Museum located at 1801 N. Prospect Avenue.

Artists may begin painting on Thursday, May 12th, and Friday, May 13th from
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. work(s) to be ready for sale
by 2:30. Work will be displayed on Sunday and must be picked up by Sunday at
4:00 p.m. Registration fee is $10 per artist, 20% commission off the sale of each item.

July 8 - September 18, 2011

Jack Richeson Co. and Bergstrom Mahler Museum are proud to announce the first Richeson 75 Wisconsin Plein Air Exhibit. This competition is open to Wisconsin residents age 18 or over, and the subject matter is limited to the Wisconsin landscape drawn/painted primarily 'en plein air' (on-site, outdoors). Any 2-D medium will be accepted, except photography or digitally created/enhanced work.

Artists must certify that the painting(s) they enter were completed primarily on-site 'en plein air' and identify the location in Wisconsin where it was created. The painting must have been completed after January 1, 2010. For the purposes of this exhibit, a painting/drawing is considered to be created primarily en plein air if only minor cosmetic adjustments were made off-site or in-studio. Art must have been created entirely by the submitted artist and not under the supervision of or with assistance from any other artist.

Jack Richeson Co. is sponsoring awards as follows:
$1,000 cash 1st Place
$500 Richeson art materials for 2nd Place
$250 Richeson art materials for 3rd Place

Entry fees are $20 for one entry, $30 for two entries, $40 for three entries per artist. Deadline for submissions is May 13, 2011.

Hey all Sorry for the late notice of painting location for this coming Saturdays paint day...I have recently returned home after being gone for an extended time and am still playing catchup!

It's spring and I always find this a most interesting time to do plein air as things are just greening but there are still wonderful wintered grasses as well.

We will be painting at and around my home in Old Ashippun. We will meet at 8AM and paint till noon then critique. There is an abundance of great painting locations in the area both close to my home as well as a short drive away!

A number of people have asked if they could view the Ken Auster video again and I can certainly make that available to you as well after our painting time. I am looking forward to seeing you all!

We had a great time painting on the snowy day in Hales Corners, WI, on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Join us at our next meeting, Saturday, March 26, 2011.
This past time, in February, we painted in the morning till noon then had a critique while eating lunch. After lunch and critique we studied the images of artist Ian Roberts and his variations on composition to a painting that destroyed the strength of a composition. That viewing activity alone can greatly improved our ability to analyze the problems in our own compositions.

It was a fun and fruitful day.

What will a painting day in Hales Corners be like?
Hales Corners, in part pictured here, is a old suburban community with rural flavor, 1930's homes and mature trees, yet also vistas of open sky on hills.

Now included in these pictures, but less than 5 minutes away is Whitnall Park one of the premier parks of Milwaukee County with prairie, woodland and marshlands as well as gentle hills. Join us to paint on this day.

Also available is a great warming location at Judith Reidy's home in the heart of Hales Corners. There you will also find indoor opportunities to paint either a still life or a view of the outside as well as hot cider to warm you.

Bring your own bag lunch for a critique at noon.

I'm impressed with you guys! Really...It was 17 degrees out and sunny but you showed up and out you went to paint!! Then when the cold was too much you came inside and painted some more!!
(Thanks to the Clinton Street Gallery for offering us some shelter!) It was a fitting end to the 2010 season. Thanks to all of you who participated this year. Remember... Hello Fellow Plein Air Painters!

I trust you all have had a great time painting in the beautiful, warm and late autumn we have had! This e-mail brings two really important topics so please read to the end.

1. We will be painting our final open paint day of 2010 on Saturday November 27th in downtown Waukesha. We will meet at The Clinton Street Gallery (336 West Main in between The Steaming Cup and the new Clark Hotel...http://theclintonstgallery.com) We will, as always meet at 8AM...go out to paint and then meet at the Clinton Street Gallery for critique. If the weather is really nasty I will bring some items for still life to paint indoors. The Steaming Cup would be a great place for lunch so if you can...lets plan to eat together after our critique. If you have not paid your dues for 2011 they are due now so bring them with you!!

Mark your calenders now for Saturday January 22nd. We are planning a special day of training videos, a pot-luck meal and perhaps a painting exchange (bring one -go home with a different one!) I will update you with place and time!

2. After the 2010 Plein Air Competition Season, many members expressed an interest in having some way to evaluate the caliber of the events in Wisconsin. In response, WIPAPA is offering a survey to artists who competed in open Wisconsin events to gather their opinion on how well each event was handled, and what characteristics you look for as a participating artist.

With the results of this survey, we will be able to create a consensus on what a successful Plein Air event consists of which, in turn, will help organizers create better events for you. We eventually intend to offer a rating system for these events, to better inform artists interested in participating.

Saturday October 23^rd we will have our open paint day at Boerner Botanical Gardens located in Whitnall Park (5879 S 92^nd St., Hales Corners). As always we will meet at 8AM paint till noon and critique. We have been told that they are beginning to winterize the gardens and that we will not have to pay to park. Just a few details I thought you might need. Weather for Saturdays Paint Day at Monches is mid 60's and partly cloudy with light winds!! YEA!! See you all there. Please remember to park way in the back. And below is a note from the Plymouth Arts Center with details for next Thurs-Saturday. Note: there is no sign in on Friday!

Check in time for the “Paint the Town en Plein Air” (Thursday-Friday Event) is between 8am and 10am Thursday morning, September 30^th, at the Plymouth Arts Center, located at 520 East Mill Street in downtown Plymouth. There is no check in on Friday morning. Paintings must be returned to the same location by 5pm Friday evening to be stamped completed.

Artists entering the Saturday morning Quick Paint may check in between 8am – 10am on Saturday morning at the PAC.

All works from both events must be returned to the PAC, FRAMED AND WIRED TO HANG, by 1:00 P.M. Saturday Afternoon, October 2^nd.

it is not a true plein air competition in the strict sense of plein air

but since that is how it is positioned I felt I needed to share this.

Pre-registration is now available for "Beyond the Canvas" MARN's take
on Plein Air.  Not into plein air?  Wait!  Don't delete this message
read on:

For this event MARN hopes to broaden the scope of plein air by
including all types of media, hence the name, Beyond the Canvas.  By
expanding this plein air event to include not just traditional forms
like oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels but also motion picture
(time-based media), photography/digital images, printmaking, and
sculpture/assemblage we contemporize the art form.

Participants will be required to use the location to inform their work
and all assets must be gathered with in the 10-day time frame. However
the work does not necessarily need to be produced entirely on site.

Ø       Open to all Media, Split into 5 Categories

o        Traditional (Oils, Acrylics, Watercolors, Pastels, Charcoal, Pencil)

o        Time-Based Media

o        Photography/Digital

from Valley influences)

Ø       Cash and Merchandise Awards for each category with additional
Best In Show Award

while working in the Valley to identify participants as artists

o        Sculpture free standing or ready to mount

o        Works on canvas must be wired

o        Works on paper may be framed or able to be hung by spring clips

o        Time Based Media must include Mpeg4 capable digital picture
frame (which would be sold with work)

Ø       Work will be presented at silent auction closing on Oct 16th, 2010

o        Auction opens on October 15th 2010 in conjunction with
October’s Gallery Night and Day activities.  Exhibition will be at
Helios, 1207 W. Canal st.

o        Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday
October 16th, 2010 with the action closing at 8:00pm

o        Artist may specify opening bid (suggest ½ fair market value)

o        30/70 commission split (with 30% going to support MARN’s
continuing mission of professional development)

Happy end of Summer to you all!

I hope you all had a fantastic summer full of plein air painting! I know I did! Although I must admit I am hungry for the first frost and the end to those pesky skeeters. I am beginning to see small signs of the trees changing! I can't wait to paint the autumn. Ok, all here's the news!:

1. Open paint on Sept. 25Th 8am to 1pm at Monches Farm rain or shine. I hope shine! (http://www.monchesfarm.com) We need to park way in the back parking lot. Hope to see you all there! FYI...you do not need to be a member to paint in the open paint so bring a friend!! BYO lunch and we will critique at 1pm.

2. Dues are due Oct 1st...$25 for the year.

3. We are about to begin the process of obtaining a NFP status, creating Corporate memberships and Patron Memberships...if you haven't been a member before this is definitely the time.

5. There is also a plein air competition in Plymouth Sept. 30Th-Oct. 2ND. Details:

Entry fees are as follows: $30 for “Paint the Town” Thursday and Friday; $15 for Saturday, Quick Paint only; and $40 for both events.
The paint out will take place on Thursday, September 30^th through Saturday, October 2^nd. There will be certain areas within Plymouth that I will outline as the painting locations. Participating artists will check in on Thursday morning to have their canvases stamped and return them by Friday evening at 5 pm to be stamped completed. There will also be a Quick Paint on Saturday from 9 am-noon where artists will check in by 8:30 am and have until 1:00 pm to return their painting, framed, wired and ready to hang for display. All paintings, including those by the Thursday/Fridaypainters, need to be returned to the Plymouth Arts Center , framed and ready to hang, by 1:00 pm on Saturday. The exhibit will be hung Saturday afternoon. On Saturday evening, October 2, from 6-9 pm, we will present a gala opening party with wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, live music, dancing and a silent auction. A 30% commission on all sales will go to the Plymouth Arts Center .
There will be a total of $1,000.00 cash awards in addition to a Salon Exhibit for the three top winners. The awards in the professional category are: First Place , $250.00; Second Place , $150.00; Third Place $100.00 plus Salon Exhibit. Three Honorable Mentions and a Viewer’s Choice Award of $50.00 each. Non professional painters will receive $150, $100, and $50 respectively.
Paula Swaydan Grebel, who was one of the three judges for the 2010 Cedarburg Plein Air Event, and I will be co-judging the paintings.
I sincerely hope to have a great turnout for this event. Many of the artists in your Guild have shown their work in Gallery 110 North at the PAC and some have won awards. To band together as a group and be a part of this fund raiser will be a way of giving back and help to insure the future expansion of the Plymouth Arts Center and Gallery 110 North!

First...I am so proud of all our members this summer...so many of you have scooped up awards!

This Friday August 6th Mid Summers Brush Begins: Registration opens at 8AM and remains open on Friday till 8PM. Saturday August 7th is the great Garden Quick Paint starting any 4 hours from 8AM till 7PM! Here are some additional dates and times! (please consider painting along side the kids on Sunday August 8th)

The park in Elm Grove was soooo incredibly beautiful this morning. Prairie flowers all around the very full reservoir as far as you could see. I had guessed light attendance for this gathering. Between the Milwaukee Artists Market, The Door County quick paint and two full days of some of the worst rain and flooding this area has ever seen, I was right. But ohhhhh did you guys miss out! Deep threatening sky for most of the morning but not one drop of the promised rain! Thank you to Dorothy at the Dooryard Gallery for hosting us! She would love us to come back!!
